the INSIDE of Georgia O'Keeffe's house
finally

the pueblo of Abiquiu was having it's saints day -
the Fiesta de Santa Rosa de Lima

her house was open for 2 hours as a donation to the church

I lucked out!

there were several of us

on the tour, everything was very controlled

one young man was very disappointed
that we were not allowed to take photos on the inside or through the windows
I told him not to worry
all the photos of the inside are online
and indeed they are
so I will not post all of them here but the few I took

 you enter into the garden

she had an acequia that watered every Monday
she also was the one who had the ditch dug from the source up the mountain
and the whole town benefited - benefits today....

this is her in the garden....
she had a large kitchen and grew most of her own food

 we went inside the courtyard
(not allowed photos so this is from the web)

the interesting thing about this wall inside her courtyard
is how many times and ways she painted it

these are just a few.....

the place is huge
there's the house and the studio

 this is the studio

my illegal photo through the window showing her work table

she also had her small bedroom off the studio

the view from her bedroom was pretty spectacular

oh and get this - she had a bomb shelter built
during the cold war below the studio

they didn't let us go in...

there were several places she had kept rocks
(that's a datura plant behind them..)

New Mexico is the definitely the place for beautiful rocks

she really got the essence of this place

thank you Georgia

my loyal and patient readers -

more remodel photos from the farm in Ojo

remember the horrible roof that connected the 2 adobe buildings?

at sometime in it's 126 year history
someone connected them

it was a low roof that leaked and
a dark room with a dirt floor
(the last owner was trying to make it into a second bathroom...)

the 2 original adobe buildings were beautiful and had integrity
and this room was never meant to be there....

so we knocked the wall down

and tore the roof off

and it already looked better

an old friend of mine from Port Townsend
told me that sometimes you have to take something out of the landscape

then we had Leroy lay some beautiful local flagstone

this is a pattern of old ferns on the flagstone
- when the layers were being laid down
a plant got in between and we see the imprint on the stone

now we have a lovely patio

that connects the 2 buildings.....
